GHANA
Obuasi Municipality, Ghana (Local event)
Control of Rabies in Obuasi MunicipalityDuration: 05/27/2008, 07.00 GMT to 06/15/2008, 16.00GMTObuasi Municipality recorded 57 pet bite cases at the vet clinic from July 2007 to December 2007.
From January 2008 to May 2008 74 pet bite cases were recorded at the same facilty. However positive rabies cases detected in these pet cases for the period rose from 3.5% to 17.4% for 2007 and 2008 respectively.
(The percentage was taken against the total pet cases reported).
The author quickly initiated a project and got some corporate bodies to fund an immunisation campaign during which all pets in the obusi municipality were vaccinated free of charge to the owners.
The response was phenomenal indeed. 3,156 pets were immunised in the 15-day exercise. The bereak-down is 2964 dogs 190 cats and two monkeys.
The author envisages a three-year immunisation project (2008-2010) in the municipality to reduce drastically the rabies menace.
We will be grateful if we can raise an amount of $13,000 for the 2009 and 2010 phases of the project.
Any body willing to help??????
