MOZAMBIQUE
Catembe, Maputo, Mozambique (Local event)
Rabies Eradication ProgramDuration: 09/30/2012, 9:00am to 09/30/2012, 5:00pmPATA will be honoring World Rabies Day with the largest of their Rabies Eradication Programs to date. Focussing efforts on Catembe, the program aims to vaccinate, de-worm and provide basic veterinary care to an area that has very limited access for stray and owned animals to any kind of veterinary care. Data collection is a vital part of this day as well, providing PATA with insight as to the need of sterilization campaigns in this area. Education forms a large part of any PATA Rabies Eradication Program, and we are happy to be working with local vets, students and volunteers to help teach owners about rabies, animal handling and care, and basic animal welfare issues. Fully supported by the Maputo District municipality, PATA's event will be the end of a week long set of co-operative clinics combining the efforts of the local goverment as well as other animal-orientated charities. With a 62% rise in rabies, year on year, in Mozambique, PATA plays a vital role in the protection of the human and animal population against this preventable disease!

SWAZILAND
Hosea,Hluthi,Swaziland, Swaziland (National event)
world rabies day commemorationDuration: 09/28/2012, 7:00am to 09/28/2012, 5:00pmThis year’s celebrations are to be staged in Shiselo, Ngozi Primary School in the Hosea Constituency, Hluti. Why Ngozi? An 8-year old grade III boy of Ngozi died of rabies at Hlatikulu Government Hospital in 2008 two months after a stray dog hotly pursued and bit him as he entered his hut at home. Before he died the youngster bit his grandmother several times. Although the Red Cross-operated Silele Clinic is 1km away, poverty and ignorance about the rabies zoonosis (transmission to humans) means the boy was only committed to hospital at the hallucinatory stage of the disease, and too late to save his life. A stray dog bit a second child, a girl this time, from the same household, in April 2008. Again medical attention proved unaffordable. At the time the Red Cross-run Silele. The cost to government of vaccinating one animal is R5.00, yet the post-exposure rabies treatment for a human victim of a bite by an unvaccinated animal is R2 500. The Day’s activities kick off about 07h00 with vaccination of as many dogs and cats as possible. Basic animal health care is offered by vets in the form of medication for endo- and ecto-parasites, general therapy and vaccinations. Rabies videos and DVDs may be shown during the exercise. A lecture is given by a veterinary surgeon with a clear message on the rabies disease in animals and its transmission to humans. A question and answer session is allowed. A health official also gives a lecture on rabies in humans followed by a question and answer session. Plays, arts, drama and dances (sibhaca, ummiso) all themed around rabies disease and control are given a chance. The household affected first-hand by rabies has graciously consented to tell their story to the audience about the experience.Materials like caps, pens and tshirts will be distributedwith massage on the disease.

UGANDA
Masaka, Uganda (Local event)
Anti-Rabies Awareness campaignDuration: 9/24/2012, 9:00 am to 9/29/2012, 5:00 pmEvery year for 3 years we organized an anti-rabies campaign in Masaka, Uganda. This campaign involves school outreach in both primary and secondary schools, community outreach on radio and cinema shows of rabies movie crowned by mass vaccination of dogs and cats. We adopt a one-health approach in which both veterinary and medical personnel and students are involved. This campaign is sponsored by rotary club of Niagara Falls, Canada and Veterinarians without borders Canada. Its executed by Veterinary practitioners without borders Uganda in conjunction with Rotary club of Kampala, Uganda. We are having it again this year in Masaka but we plan to make it bigger next year to include 12 more districts and vaccinate humans at risk too. We also plan to support the regional referral hospital in Masaka to be more rabies prepared in terms of rabies surveillance, prevention and treatment come 2013. We hope to obtain funding from Rotary International plus other partners to fulfill that ambitious plan.
