World Rabies Day at SPCA Hong KongDuration: 27 September 2011, Opening hours to None, Closing hoursIn conjunction with World Rabies Day, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) [SPCA (HK)] recently conducted a public survey with 448 respondents of all ages and profile, and the results revealed that members of the public have some degree of misconception to rabies.
Major findings from the Rabies Awareness Survey include:
1. Rabies is almost 100% fatal – However, 83.5% of the respondents are not aware that once symptoms appeared, rabies is almost 100% fatal.
2. Hong Kong has remained rabies-free for more than 20 years and the last outbreak was reported in 1987 – 44.9% of the respondents did not know when rabies was last reported in Hong Kong. 5.8% of the respondents believed that rabies never took place in Hong Kong.
3. The greatest risk of rabies being brought to Hong Kong is through smuggling of animals – Only 29% of the respondents knew that the greatest risk was from smuggled pets. 41.7% misconceived that stray dogs are of the greatest risk
To raise awareness about the risk of rabies, a series of public education campaigns will be implemented by the SPCA (HK):

“Extended World Rabies Day” Duration: 09/29/2011, 8:00 AM to 09/29/2011, 11:00 AMRabies talk and Quiz at St. Stephens School, New Delhi
Dated: 29/09/2011. It was part of “Extended World Rabies Day” celebration. A talk and Quiz on Rabies was organized at St. Stephens School, New Delhi, courtesy Novartis (Rabipur).
It was an altogether different experience. Children and their teachers including the principal of the school were very inquisitive about rabies.
The students were given an assignment by the principal, of writing about rabies as their home work.
I was astonished to observe the memory of students as they answered the questions in Quiz contest. They could even recall the Post-exposure and Pre-exposure schedules after watching a film on Rabies.
Prizes were given to students with correct answers.
The principal has urged me to hold similar talk on rabies next month also.

National Ensemble on Rabies and other Viral EncephalitisDuration: 9/27/2011, 10:00 AM to 06/28/2011, 5:00 PMEncephalitis, an acute inflammation of the brain is a major public health concern. Viral infection is the most common and important cause, however, precise figures for incidence of encephalitis is not known. Among these, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has been occurring in urban as well as semi-urban areas in epidemic proportions all over India while incidences occurring due to NIPAH or Chandipura virus are among the emerging & re-emerging viral infections.
It is also noteworthy that Rabies, one of the oldest known and 100% vaccine preventable viral infection produces almost uniformly fatal encephalitis in humans and most other mammalian species. The burden of the disease is quite high with nearly 20,000 deaths being reported annually in India, the vast majority of the victims being children under the age of 15 years.
Haffkine Institute, a premiere bio-medical research institute in India that has been catering to public health for more than 110 years, is taking an initiative to focus on the problem of encephalitis and is proud to organize a National Ensemble on Rabies & other Viral Encephalitis –NERVE 2011. This National Symposium is being organized to discuss such infectious viral diseases concerning the Central Nervous System which predominantly manifest as encephalitis and to commemorate World Rabies Day celebrated each year on 28th of September.
The objective of the symposium is to address key issues like the advances in diagnosis, present and future therapeutics and clinical approach towards these diseases. Participation is open to all individuals interested in infectious neurovirology!

Rabies Controling and Prevention in IranDuration: 09/28/2011, 8:00 AM to 10/06/2011, 8:00 PMTogether with the world, Iran-IVSA’s Rabies National Students committee has some plans for World Rabies Day in order to inform public about preventions and first aids of rabies simultaneously.
It is planned to hold a scientific seminar entitled "Rabies Prevention and Control" in each involved city. The rabies seminar will include presentations from rabies experts and it will provide a forum for discussion on human rabies prevention and control. It will bring together experts in rabies from academia, private and public health communities.
On the other hand, several groups of veterinary and medicine students were prepared to inform public about rabies, especially in suburbs and rural areas to whom may threaten more by rabies, by holding some workshops, broadcast information, flowchart fliers and so forth.
This is a national project that will be held in some important cities of Iran with cooperation of Veterinary and Medicine students by local Veterinary and Health Administrations supports and Rabies National Students Committee superintendence.
These events will be held between September 28th (World Rabies Day) and October 6th (Iranian National Veterinary Day).
Fortunately, in recent years health organizations in Iran could put the rabies victims in many cities in control.
We are of the opinion that informing the public is the best way to prevent Rabies. Working Together to Make Rabies history!

NEPAL
Pokhara, Nepal (Local event)
HART Neutering & Vaccination CampaignDuration: 09/25/2011, 08:00 to 09/30/2011, 1700The main work of Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust, (HART) is the humane management of dog and cat populations, and the eradication of rabies.
HART currently works in Pokhara and Bharatpur, Nepal, both areas which have had little or no previous animal welfare work.
Prior to HART’s intervention the street animals were culled by regular strychnine poisoning.
Evaluation of the first two years of work indicates that the street dog population in Pokhara is being successfully controlled by our spaying program. However the population of feral cats is increasing.
In order to stop this growth HART will commemorate World Rabies Day 2011 with a special series of days over 25th Sept to 30th Sept focusing on cats.
This will include a free cat spaying and health camp held at the Government veterinary hospital, the District Livestock Office, plus another at HART's clinic in Pokhara.
The work is supported by the UK registered charities HAT (UK) and the B&J Charitable Trust.
Cat traps and a crush cage have been donated by HAT(UK) and a volunteer vet from the UK, Dr Russell Lyon who will assist and advise HART's own vets.
The program will be conducted in co-ordination with the District Livestock Office, the Pokhara Sub Metropolitan City and the Nepal Veterinary Association - Pokhara Chapter.

World Rabies Day / World Tourism DayDuration: 09/24/2011, 9:00 AM to 09/30/2011, 4:00 PMThe Tsunami Animal-People Alliance (TAPA) implements a mass spay-neuter program, sterilizing about 500 dogs and some cats per month from our tented field clinic that moves from community to community in the tsunami zone, and now also in the former war zone. Each outreach also includes an education element, where the team visit schools and community centers to teach local people health & safety and animal welfare.
TAPA, in cooperation with the Hope Foundation, will set up our portable spay/neuter field clinic in the Mt. Lavinia Hotel Car Park Sept 24-30. At the invitation of the National Tourist Board, we will recognize World Tourism Day (Sept 27) by presenting a plan for conducting spay/neuter in tourist areas with support of the tourism industry. We will recognize World Rabies Day on Sept 28 by promoting that Sri Lanka offers various program initiatives in this area and welcoming a visit by WSPA, and on Sept 30, we will have early recognition of World Animal Day featuring a visit by Ms. Otara Gunewardena, Sri Lanka's World Animal Day Ambassador and founder of Project Embark.
Each day will feature a Chief Guest, including from the Ministries of Health, Tourism, Education, etc as well as Ambassador Patricia Butenis of the American Embassy. Our spay/neuter/vaccinate clinic will operate throughout (include catch-neuter-vaccinate-release of street/community dogs caught with nets and returned to the spot where caught after recovery.) All are welcome to visit, and bring animals for spay/neuter and treatment.

Spay Clinic for Owned and Commmunity DogsDuration: 24th September 2011, 8:00 am to 24th September 2011, 4:00 pmThis clinic will be held at a Buddhist Temple of the area, given to us free. Notices of the event will be put up about one week ahead of the date, through which we ask people in the area to make use of the free clinic to have their female dogs spayed in order to curb the emergence of unwanted dogs and the spread of rabies. We will vaccinate all community dogs we spay against rabies, but will not do so for the owned dogs as they are annually vaccinated by the State (Health Ministry). All community dogs will get a red collar and also will have a V-shape snip at the upper end of their left ear tip as an identification for being spayed. We have identified about 10 community dogs so far and we will employ our own dog catcher to catch them.
Price:It is a free clinic for the community
