Rabies vaccination campaignDuration: 9/28/2011, 9:00am to 10/2/2011, 5:00 pmSmall and simple, yet nationwide campaign organized by Veterinary Association of Belize and Humane Society, with support of Institute for Sustainable International Studies (ISIS). We have 200 donated vaccines that will be distributed for free by 6 participating veterinarians and 2 Humane Societies in 5 districts and the main offshore Island San Pedro. While these numbers might seem small, we are also a very small country with 330.000 inhabitants, only 25 veterinarians and less then 15 vet clinics in the country. We will also print the children's coloring book provided on website to give out with vaccines. We are also using the provided materials for media. Thank you Worldrabiesday.org for excellent assistance!

Dominican Republic Rabies Prevention and Sterilization CampaignDuration: 09/19/2011, 7:00 am to 09/24/2011, 5:00 pmWe will hold a high volume, high standard sterilization and rabies vaccination program on the North Coast of the DR, in Rio San Juan. Our services are free to the local people. 15 international and Dominican volunteers are coming together to form the clinic team. We expect to sterilize and vaccinate over 400 animals in 6 days. This is the first campaign in Rio San Juan so we expect to be very busy. In conjunction with the campaign, we are also holding a humane education program in the local schools and an outreach program each lunchtime in the local park. Rabies is a problem in the DR and as such we are working with the Anti Rabies Department of the Government. They have kindly donated the rabies vaccine to us. We have invited their vets to our clinic so we can train them in spaying and neutering. The collective goal is to prevent the spread of rabies through vaccination and sterilization instead of using lethal methods. If you would like to help, or donate, please contact us today.

Peter Costa, Global Communications Coordinator for GARC emphasizes that vaccination is essential. “As a responsible pet owner, the most important thing you can do is to have your pet vaccinated against rabies,” he said.
Throughout the fall The HSVB & IRC will also be providing educational programs focusing on animal safety for children. “Vaccinating pets against rabies and teaching children how to act safely.

The event took place at the University of Illinois Stock Pavilion. 39 veterinary students, 3 veterinarians, several undergraduate students, and a few individuals from local community groups volunteered to help with the event. Altogether 52 cats and dogs were vaccinated for rabies. There was also an education area that many owners visited to learn more about rabies and common animal diseases. This event received support from Merial, Midwest Veterinary Supply, Hill’s, SAVMA, AVMA-GHLIT, Meijer, as well as media coverage from WCIA, a local news station. Overall, the event was a success. Many animals were able to be vaccinated that might not have otherwise been vaccinated and students gained experience planning, organizing, and running a vaccine clinic. This event will hopefully be held again in future years.

URUGUAY
Punta del Este, Uruguay (International event)
Ibero American Symposium of Emerging and Reemerging Zoonotic Diseases. Duration: 11/24/2011, 8:00am to 11/26/2011, 12:30 pmSUVEPA, the Uruguayan Veterinary Association of Small Animal Specialists, an Association that is a member of WSAVA and FIAVAC, in association with the SMVU, the Uruguayan Veterinary Association and CEVEMA (the Maldonado Veterinary Association) are organizing the VIII Ibero American FIAVAC Congress to be held in Punta del Este, Uruguay next November 24 to 26, www.fiavac2011.org
Given the role of the Veterinary profession in Public Health and Epidemiologic Surveillance and taking into account the constant evolution of ecosystems and their influence on the geographical distribution of many diseases, the Organizing Committee decided to also include the Ibero American Symposium of Emerging and Reemerging Zoonotic Diseases.
With the conviction that the integrated control and surveillance of Zoonotic diseases is the key for success, this symposium adheres to the One Health concept, thus integrating physicians, veterinary doctors, epidemiologists, public health workers and international, governmental and non-governmental institutions.
The close relationship between human family members and small companion animals (including dogs and cats and also exotic pets such as rodents) and the known interactions of pets with wildlife and production animals, raises concern about the intersection of wild and urban cycles of disease. For this reason, the Scientific Committee decided to include the following topics:
• Chiroptera Rabies vs Canine and Feline Rabies, just at one game distance
• Leishmaniasis, Epidemiology and behavior of the disease in a partially virgin continent
• Hantavirus, strategies for epidemiological control
• Leptospirosis interactions in prevention and risk communication
• Tick Transmitted Diseases, the tip of the iceberg
You are all invited to visit our web page http://fiavac2011.org/simposio.php as well as our beautiful country, the congress will be held in Spanish and part of it will be translated to Portuguese.
