GHANA

MANSO NKWANTA, AMANSIE WEST DISTRICT IN ASHANTI REGION, Ghana (Regional event)

AWARENESS CREATION OF RABIES AMONG JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Duration: 27/09/2011, 11:00GMT to 29/10/2011, 14:00 GMT

WORLD RABIES DAY GHANA Rabies in pets (dogs and cats) has been on the ascendency in Ghana in the past decade. Human deaths are occasionally reported from different parts of the country. The last coordinated national anti-rabies campaign was organized in 2005 and since then districts and municipalities undertake this activity depending their local disease situation. This uncoordinated rabies vaccination regime is of much concern to veterinarians and public health practitioners. A number of strategies have been proposed lately to correct the situation. The main strategy to minimize these upsurges is an aggressive public awareness creation throughout the country. To address this need a flyer on rabies has been prepared and published. It spells out basic information on rabies – the infection, diagnosis and control measures. The rabies flyers will be distributed to eight thousand (8,000) students and teachers in Junior High Schools (JHS) in the Amansie West District in Ashanti Region of the Republic of Ghana. This will create awareness on the nature of the disease rabies among the 12-15 years students. This age group is one of the most important vehicles for rabies information dissemination in the district. Dr A.H.K. Kwansah-Filson (DVM M Sc. Vet.) will present the RABIES FLYERS to the District Director of Education at a ceremony at the Directorate of Education at Manso Nkwanta, on TUESDAY, 27TH SEPTEMBER 2011. Representatives of heads of the beneficiary Junior High Schools, students, the media and Head of Government in the district will be invited to the ceremony. LIBERIA

Give children the knowledge to protect themselves from rabies
Duration: 19/09/2011, 09:00 to 29/09/2011, 16:00

World Rabies Day Celebration in 2011. Rabies day celebration in Liberia is a very important approach in addressing the issue of rabies. Rabies is one of the deadly neglected diseases in the country. Dog bites are very serious in the society. Most hospitals in Liberia do not have human anti-rabies vaccines. People who are bitten by dogs are vulnerable to rabies. According to a study done by LAWS volunteers in few hospitals in Lofa County, children are the main victims of dog bites. LAWS believes that one of the main ways of controlling the spread of rabies is to educate people about dog bite prevention. This year the world rabies day celebration will focus on educating children on dog bite prevention and also encouraging them to report cases of dog bites to the nearest clinics and hospitals. When children are attacked by dogs they are unable to protect themselves, so educating them on how to protect themselves from dog bites is an important means of fighting rabies among humans. Our theme for this year celebration is "Give children the knowledge to protect themselves from rabies". LAWS in partnership with the non-profit organization Doggone Safe will carry on awareness education in 10 schools on dog bite prevention, and rabies control. LAWS will also do an outreach free rabies vaccination exercise in 5 communities. This activity will take place from September 19 to 29 in Voinjama, Kolahun and Foya Districts. Our aim is to educate over 1000 students and vaccinate over 500 dogs and cats with rabies vaccine.
