World Rabies Day 2010Duration: 9/21/2010, to 9/28/2010, World Rabies Day, 2010 in Nepal
With the slogan of “Working together to make Rabies a history”, World Rabies Day 2010 started as a week long program from 21st September 2010 to 28th September 2010 in Nepal. Veterinary Public health Office, Department of Livestock Services; and Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, Department of Health and Nepal Public Health Association together organized many programs to celebrate WRD 2010 in Nepal.
The program started with School teaching about Rabies: Fatal but Preventable Disease. Private schools, Government schools, School for Deaf, and Women schools were involved in teaching –learning of Rabies. Approximately 3800 school students were involved in learning across the country and Essay competition was also conducted during the week and the first three students were awarded with cash prize at the concluding paper presentation and discussion ceremony.
Other programs were free vaccination of Anti-rabies to stray and community dogs along with the pet dogs at the organized camp. Post office co-operated with WRD celebration by stamping on every envelope with its slogan. Pamphlets and stickers of WRD 2010 were distributed to the general public and were adhered to the wall and notice board for public attention. All of the district livestock services office performed some kind of awareness programs to support the mainstream awareness campaign organized centrally. Rally was organized by them and general public came in to celebrate with its slogan.
Veterinary educational institutes of Nepal, namely Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Tribhuvan University and HICAST, Purbanchal University also took active part in the campaign by doing various activities for a week. The clinics of both universities and private clinics of Nepal administered vaccine with 50% discount during the period. Similarly other NGO like KAT, SPCA Nepal, PETA Nepal and Animal Nepal also joined hand in hand to celebrate WRD 2010 with full enthusiasm and promise to control the dog population and Rabies control.
But to get Rabies in control we need to extend our arms and legs to reach to millions of people to let them know about Rabies at least. Celebrating WRD for a week will not create a deep impact on existing situation unless every day of the year is regarded same to control Rabies.

Spay clinic at Mahamaya Girls' College, KandyDuration: 9/25/2010, 8:00 am to 9/25/2010, 2:00 pmOn the 25th of September, at the request of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, we conducted a spay clinic at the school for dogs found in the school premises and in close vicinity to the school, as our World Rabies Day activity. At the spay clinic, we spayed two cats, three male dogs and 6 female dogs and vaccinated the unvaccinated dogs. Although we did not spay many animals, it was a beautiful program as we had the help of several little kids for the first time. One of KACPAW's volunteers, Kumari, who organized this program, had brought several of her young students so that they could learn all about spaying, vaccinating, and how to care for animals. It was indeed a learning experience for the kids and they enjoyed being helpful. Two wee pups picked up from a rubbish heap close to the Bogambara Grounds in Kandy were taken by us to the clinic for their anti-rabies shots (ARV) and de-worming and de-lousing. Although the two pups were just about a month old, we vaccinated them against rabies and will give a booster shot in another three months. This ARV schedule has been recommended for pups under 3 months by the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Peradeniya after some of its academics found out from a study that analyzed 116 of the nearly 140 blood samples made available to them from our shelter dogs that the "maternal antibody levels of unvaccinated pups are inadequate." They also found out that the "pre-exposure vaccination using inactivated virus is an effective prophylaxis against rabies in dogs." The meticulous records maintained for each of our shelter dogs provided the invaluable as well as rare and dependable data for the above study.
