ANTIRABIES - World Rabies Day - BUCHAREST ROMANIA 2009

Friday, November 20, 2009 – At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Bucharest - ROMANIA, a series of events dedicated to "World Rabies Day – Bucharest 2009” – Year of the fight against rabies. Thus, at 10:00 in Aula "Prof. univ. Dr. Aurel Popoviciu” a workshop on rabies - "ANTIRABIC - World Rabies Day – Bucharest 2009” - attended by faculty teachers, veterinarians, human physicians, veterinarians of County Veterinary Medical Directions, specialists from the Institute for Diagnosis and Animal Health (Reference Laboratory for Rabies for Romania), professional biologists of Natural Parks, students from the University of Bucharest, pet owners and media. Besides these activities, there was a free vaccination and microchips implanting campaign at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Preventive Medicine of the Faculty – about 50 pet owners have come to vaccination and about as many for microchips implanting. We planned a trip to the territory in the next days – “rabies caravan” – and we will start it on November 26 in Naruja town of Vrancea – where was recently an outbreak of rabies. There together with the district veterinarians we will participate to the vaccination of domestic animals, we will notify the animal owners about the danger of rabies, we will provide information material and will hold a presentation at the village school where we inform the children about the danger of rabies. During the caravan we will stop in a couple small villages and towns and will distribute information materials and posters containing information and messages about rabies. Such outputs/field trips are planned also during December 2009.

Pasteur Institute in Novi Sad, the national reference institution for rabies in Serbia has organized a press conference. Also in all local communities, where are so called anti-rabies stations, were people in Serbia are getting anti-rabies treatment, press conference is also planned to take place.

RABIES SCHOOLS INFO DAYS

SFS Centar, Novi Sad RABIES SCHOOLS INFO DAYS – ages 11-18 Will be hold in primary schools in Novi Sad and secondary school for education of agriculture technicians in Futog village which is part of the Novi Sad district. The classes will be continued through October 2009 in as many schools as they have interest. How we can protect ourselves and others from rabies disease. The info days are designed as school classes about rabies and vaccination against rabies as the best protective measure from it. Moreover, the info days will be an opportunity for promotion of achieved protection goal, in the past two years, via vaccination of dogs in urban and rural area of Novi Sad district, action financed from the budget of Municipality Novi Sad. Lessons design allows pupils to understand the rabies disease and the importance of prevention and promotion of knowledge about how dangerous a disease it is.
